What are Biometrics and Biometric Technology?
A Biometric is a unique, measurable characteristic of a human being that can be used to automatically recognize an individual or verify an individual’s identity. Biometrics can measure both physiological and behavioural characteristics. Physiological biometrics (based on measurements and data derived from direct measurement of a part of the human body) include:
Finger-scan, Face Recognition, Iris-scan, Retina-scan, Hand-scan
Behavioural biometrics (based on measurements and data derived from an action) include:
Voice-scan, Signature-scan, Keystroke-scan
Biometric Technology
1. Analyses and measures certain biological characteristics of an individual to create a unique identifier, which can be electronically stored and retrieved for positive identification.
2. Eliminates the problems associated with password management by measuring human characteristics such as voiceprint, fingerprint, iris pattern and facial contours, which are virtually impossible to duplicate and cannot be lost like traditional passwords.
3. Makes it more convenient for end-users to access their computer accounts, while maintaining a secure method of user authentication. It has been proven superior to the other means of positive identification that rely upon cards, PINs, passwords or personal information.
Why choose Face Recognition over other Biometrics?
Face Recognition Technology involves analyzing certain facial characteristics, storing them in a database and using them to identify users accessing systems. There are number of reasons to choose face recognition. Some of them are: It is non-intrusive and requires no physical interaction on behalf of the user It is accurate and allows for high enrolment and verification rates It does not require an expert to interpret the comparisons It can use your existing hardware infrastructure – existing cameras and image capture devices will work smoothly You can use existing images without having to re-enroll every user (For ID cards, passports, driver’s licenses, etc.) It is the ONLY biometric that allows you to perform passive identification in a one-to-many environment (e.g. Identifying a terrorist in a busy airport terminal)
